Solar Rebates & Incentives Update for 2026

January 2, 2026

The landscape of solar incentives in Alberta has evolved significantly since 2021. Here’s what’s available now to help make your solar installation more affordable.

Current Federal Programs

Federal Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
Businesses can now recover up to 30% of the upfront costs of installing a solar energy system. This refundable tax credit applies to investments made by taxable entities in solar PV, wind, and energy-storage technologies and is available through 2034.

Important Note: The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant program is no longer accepting new applications as of 2026. The Greener Homes Loan program ended October 1, 2025, and is no longer available for new applicants.

Municipal Programs in Alberta

Town of Banff Solar Rebate
The most generous municipal program currently available in Alberta:

  • Residential: $750 per kW installed, up to 20 kW maximum ($15,000 max rebate)
  • Commercial: $750 per kW installed, up to 20 kW maximum
  • Requirements: Minimum 2 kW system, CSA/ULC approved equipment, completed Microgeneration Agreement with Fortis
  • Note: Building permits required but fees are waived for solar installations

City of Edmonton Multi-Unit Solar Rebate
Edmonton’s solar rebate program now focuses exclusively on multi-unit residential properties:

  • Eligibility: Properties with 4+ units or dwellings
  • Rebate: $0.50 per watt
  • Maximum: $4,000 per dwelling, up to $100,000 total per property owner per calendar year
  • Note: Single-family residential rebates are no longer available through the City of Edmonton
  • Applications: Available through Change Homes for Climate

Other Municipal Programs:

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

One of the most flexible financing options available in Alberta, CEIP allows homeowners and businesses to finance solar installations through their property tax bill with:

  • Interest rates: 1.2% – 3.6%
  • Terms: Up to 20 years
  • No traditional credit check – approval based on property value and tax status
  • Transfer with property – if you sell your home, the financing stays with the property

CEIP is available in these municipalities (as of 2026):
Airdrie, Athabasca, Banff, Calgary, Canmore, Cold Lake, Devon, Drayton Valley, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Leduc, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Okotoks, Pincher Creek, Rocky Mountain House, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stirling, Stettler, Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, Taber, Westlock

Check with your municipality or contact SolarNinjas to confirm CEIP availability in your area.

Net Metering

Alberta’s Micro-Generation Regulation allows homeowners to earn credits on their utility bills for excess energy exported back to the electrical grid. This province-wide program helps maximize the return on your solar investment.

Solar Financing Options

Even though the federal interest-free loan has ended, several financing options remain:

RBC Home Energy Loan

  • 1% interest rate or $100 off an Energy Audit for loans of $5,000+
  • Repayment terms of 5-10 years
  • No early repayment fees
  • Can reduce interest rate by 1% for solar PV projects

TD Bank Solar Financing
Offers personal loans, lines of credit, and business financing options for solar installations.

Scotiabank Green Energy Financing
Finance up to 100% of start-up costs for solar projects with utility payments.

Installer Financing
Many qualified solar installers, including SolarNinjas, offer 0% financing options to help you go solar with minimal upfront cost.

Why Support for Solar Matters

While some question government incentives for renewable energy, it’s worth remembering that traditional energy sectors have received billions in taxpayer support over decades. Solar creates three times the jobs per million dollars invested compared to oil or coal, making these programs a smart investment in Alberta’s economic future.

It’s more than fair that individual taxpayers receive support for making environmentally responsible choices. Solar isn’t cheap to install properly—if it were, everyone would already have it. These incentives help level the playing field and give Alberta families and businesses the freedom to invest in clean, renewable energy that reduces costs and emissions for decades to come.

Act Now – Programs Are Limited

Rebate programs are designed for early adoption. As more Albertans go solar, benefits may be reduced or phased out entirely. The time to take advantage of current incentives is now.

Contact SolarNinjas today to see how we can help you maximize available rebates and incentives for your Edmonton-area solar installation. We’ll handle the paperwork, ensure you qualify for every program available, and design a system that delivers maximum value for your investment.
